Color vs. Value
Colors have different values and therefore affect image presentation. I
am talking here about color vs. achromatic black/white.
contrast is responsible for delivering image impact, sense of form and
distance. However, without color the visual experience might be quite
boring, powerful black/white abstracts, a la Motherwell notwithstanding.
My recent work on a 9 @ 18"x18" sectional painting
gave me a first hand example. At one point I painted negative spaces in a
range of greys, thinking to offset and thereby enhance brightly colored
positive areas. Technically, it accomplished that but I just didn't
love it. The moment I gave in to my emotional need for color, replacing
greys with violets and pale blues, I realized a sense of fulfillment,
lacking in the greys.
Conclusion: Value performs the hard functional
work. Color provides aesthetic enjoyment.
